My name is Rikuto. I am a 14 year old student attending Crimson Global Academy, and I live in Sapporo, Japan.

After reading this article, I discovered the presence of rare metals within phones. When those rare metals are extracted and recycled, they can be reused in new phones to avoid habitat destruction.

However, the quantity of rare metals being reused is sparse; currently, less than 20% of unwanted phones on average are recycled annually.

Many people have broken phones. These phones are often left and forgotten because their owners are unable to delete the personal information.

My Idea is to collect these broken phones with the purpose of deleting the personal information within each device. I will personally deliver the phones form Sapporo to Tokyo for the phones' destruction.

The Dutch organisation Intimus manufactures FlashEx Digital Media Shredders, which are used to destroy and delete all the information from every phone that is shredded. I will hand-deliver the phones to a business in Tokyo that uses the FlashEx shredders for the exact purpose described above.

Because a brand new FlashEx shredder costs a total of ¥3 000 000, businesses that own these shredders charge ¥980 per phone destroyed. I am aiming to collect 20 phones at the minimum, and including travel fees, my endeavour will cost me about ¥120,000.

One million mobile phones could deliver approximately 16.4 tonnes in total of copper, silver, gold and palladium. The destruction of one phone leads to the loss of 1kg of carbon dioxide which would have otherwise been released into the atmosphere.

One phone is enough to make a difference.

Please support me and my cause.
